The University of Bonn Gender Equality Office has awarded the Gender Studies Prize annually since 2003 for outstanding theses on topics of relevance to gender studies from a content or methodological standpoint, with the aim of heightening the profile of gender research at the University of Bonn and in the broader academic community.
Distinguished gender studies thesis papers
The members of the judges panel for the 2024 prize were Professor Nadine Marquardt (socio-geography), Assistant Professor Anna Maria Riedl (Christian social ethics) and Professor Andreas Krebs (Department of Old Catholic Studies), who chose the following theses:
• Marlene Sieverdingbeck, for her bachelor’s thesis in Philosophy: “Kritische Perspektiven auf Consent Theorien – Eine intersektionale Analyse liberal- und radikalfeministischer Ansätze zu sexuellem Consent” (“Critical Perspectives on Consent Theories—An intersectional analysis of liberal and radical feminist approaches to sexual consent”)
• Judith Reinders, for her master’s thesis in Catholic Theology: “Die bärtige Heilige als inklusive Erlöserin? Forschung zu Legende und Kult um die heilige Kümmernis” (“The Bearded Saint as Inclusive Savior? Research on the legend and cult of Saint Wilgefortis”)
An unusually broad spectrum of gender research was represented this year, as 25 theses in 14 different fields were submitted to compete for the award. “We are very pleased to see such a significant increase in the number of theses submitted, which we view as a clear indicator of the growing importance of gender studies at the University of Bonn,” emphasized program coordinator Felicitas Frigge.
Recognizing outstanding commitment to gender equality
The Maria von Linden Prize was awarded in parallel, which is presented in recognition of outstanding work relevant to gender equality at the University of Bonn. The award takes its name from Maria Gräfin von Linden (1869–1936), who became the first woman in Germany to receive the title of “Scientiae Naturalis Doctor” in 1895 and subsequently became the University of Bonn’s first honorary professor.
Mathematics student Sophia Piacenza was recognized in the category of individual achievement for her work promoting gender equality. She served as Co-Chair of the Gender Equality working group of the Mathematics Department, and has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to raising awareness of gender equality and diversity issues, in part by developing an interactive training concept for mathematics tutors.
The Queer Network of the Faculty of Protestant Theology received the award in the group achievement category for its dedication to raising awareness of diversity and queerness issues and cultivating a support network active both in and outside of the faculty. While creating a safe space for its members, the network holds workshops, queer church services and other activities designed to impact society at large.
University Gender Equality Commissioner Gabriele Alonso Rodriguez: “Those who are spearheading efforts around diversity and gender equality are facing an increasing headwind in today’s climate. Thus it is all the more important for the University to have a robust network of individuals committed to working toward advancement of these objectives in academia, promoting dialogue and providing support.”
